Claire Feeley, previously of Milton Keynes University, talks about her Masters study on why some women choose to freebirth. The act of freebirthing is explained and the UK laws around it. She describes research methodology and methods, using interpretive phenomenology. Claire discusses the personal stories of the women and explores the different paths of making decisions and how the women understood risk. The issues for midwifery practice are identified including what midwives need to change.

The development of personalisation and choice across a local maternity system is explored. Donna Evans, Maternity Services Transformation Manager, SHIP Maternity Pioneer, explains how the development was pioneered across their area with family focussed care. Donna uses a case study of current experience to illustrate some of the issues to improve, and a basis for making changes to service. She describes the pioneer pathway, including labour line, and how it works. Personal maternity care budgets are explained in relation to the choices of place of care for women. Progress and challenges are addressed along with the next steps.

Cate Langley, Consultant Midwife, Hywel Dda University Health Board, shares the background to the clinic and explains the context of the Montgomery ruling. She introduces the birth choices clinic, with a focus on the human rights of the woman and supports her making her decision about care. The resources used to help are explored along with the running of the clinic. Cate shares some of the data and feedback from users and other midwifery colleagues.
