24 hour labour line: Rethinking telephone support for women during early labour

2016  |  23 mins  |  Managing Birth Services

There is an evidenced relationship between admission in latent labour and intervention. NICE guidance encourages labouring women to stay at home during this phase of labour. However, the support during latent labour is often limited. In this talk, Marie Nott, Midwifery Lecturer, University of Southampton and Olivia Lowe, Midwife, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, discuss their 24/7 telephone line to provide support in all phases of labour. This service, in collaboration with the emergency services, aims to provide telephone triaging and education, whilst facilitating community home assessments in early labour. They discuss the initial service evaluation, with positive responses from service users and midwives, improving experiences and communication.
