2019 | 20 mins | Neonatal Postnatal Care
The importance of the parent-child relationship for psycho-physical outcomes, particularly in the days and weeks following birth, is well evidenced. Understanding their behaviours and needs is a key part of this relationship-building. Baby skin care: Sharing evidence with new parents to ensure best practice
2018 | 23 mins | Neonatal Postnatal Care
In this talk, Dr Alison Cooke, midwifery lecturer at the University of Manchester, discusses their RCM-commissioned study, aiming to create new guidance for healthcare professionals. The study formed two parts: a systematic review and audit of practice, and surveys and focus groups of parents, LMEs and multi-professionals stakeholders. Despite parents expecting clear, consistent advice from healthcare professionals, often conflicting, non-evidence-based information is provided, with little policy in place on infant skincare. Alison critically discusses the issues surrounding education and information-provision, and next steps for guidance dissemination.

Live music therapy on the neonatal unit
2018 | 16 mins | Neonatal Postnatal Care
In this podcast, Wendy Jeenes, Music Therapist, Midwife, Cornwall Music Service Trust, Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust, shares that singing to babies is not new; that we often use lullabies, for example. She explains why music therapy is useful to help both the neonate and the parents during the time in a neonatal unit. She presents evidence that shows the affect on music on the baby, and the types of music that are effective. Wendy goes on to share results from the evaluation of the pilot study of the use of music therapy in the neonatal unit from parents and staff.
