As time progresses more is being understood about the importance of healthy nutrition in pregnancy and beyond, both for the pregnant woman and the baby. The talks in this set present the importance of midwives providing the best healthy living advice during pregnancy, particularly around healthy eating. A session discusses how a specialised clinic can assist women with hyperemesis gravidarum and improve nutrition.

Shauna Callaghan, research midwife, National Maternity Hospital, Dublin, explains the study ‘Provisional findings of midwives’ and obstetricians’ confidence, knowledge and practice, and a pilot of the FIGO Nutrition checklist’. Protocol for the evaluation of a new hydration clinic for women with Hyperemesis Gravidarum

In this talks Helen McHale, Clinical midwife manager & Melanie Bennett, Midwife, National hospital, Dublin, describe the innovation of a specialist clinic for women with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). The condition is explained with the effects on women and babies, identified through a qualitative survey. Following the study a multidisciplinary clinic for women with HG was set up to support them. The challenges of setting up is shared and information of how the clinic is run and the treatments used. The use of urine Specific Gravity as a measure is explained. Mental wellbeing support is offered along with continuity of care with a known midwife. The evaluation of the clinic is introduced along with plans for the future.
